Is Parenthood Supposed to be This Hard?

Struggling to Make It Through:

On a daily basis, you feel hopeless and powerless against how you are thinking and feeling. You always wanted kids, but this was not what you were expecting. Social media and friends always described parenthood as a beautiful experience. Your lived experience didn’t match up. You are always feeling worried that you aren’t doing enough as a parent. Sadness and anxiety don’t seem like they are going away. You also may have increased irritability/rage with your partner that feels completely out of character. You feel consumed by fears about baby’s well being. You don’t recognize this version of yourself.

When you were pregnant, it was labeled as high risk by doctors. You experienced complications in birth like unplanned C-Section, NICU stay, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure or preeclampsia, etc. You felt robbed of the birth experience that you wanted to have. You started feeling consumed with thoughts of “not being a good enough parent”. You may have been reminded of your own memories from your childhood. Reminded of all the things you did or didn’t receive. You want your child to have “more” than what you had. You may find yourself overwhelmed when thinking of your child’s health, visiting the hospital, or hearing others birth experiences. You planned and prepared, but nothing came out the way you were expecting.

1 out 5 women experience postpartum mood disorders. There are various types of postpartum mood disorders. I typically work with postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, and postpartum PTSD.

Some risk factors of postpartum mood disorders include having a mental health diagnosis before pregnancy, complications during birth, having thyroid or hormone conditions and difficulties with baby’s feeding or sleeping habits.

You’re tired of feeling caught in this cycle:

  • Mentally exhausted from attempting to fix everything without support.

  • Overwhelmed by the responsibilities of parenting.

  • Feeling like you don’t recognize yourself anymore especially when anger and guilt come to the surface.

  • Feeling stretched thin, powerless or hopeless as a parent.
